Finding a Reputable Breeder

A reputable breeder feels a sense of responsibility for the dogs they bring into the world and for the breed in general.

A good breeder should:

• Be able to provide a copy of the pedigree and explain why they selected the bloodlines they used
  
  
• Be willing and eager to provide advice and help to new owners throughout the dog’s life
  
  
• Not have more litters than they can take care of at one time
  
  
• Provide new owners with a health guarantee and contract
  
  
• Perform as through of a genetic assessment as possible on the dogs that they are breeding
  
  
• Be focused on producing puppies with excellent temperament and health
  
  
• Provide puppies with regularly scheduled vaccinations and health checks
  
  
• Screen potential owners to make sure that their pups are going to suitable homes
  
  
• Insist on talking directly to the individual(s) interested in their pups
  
  
• Be registered with and support kennel clubs and organizations (CKC, AKC, etc.)
  
  
• Be able to provide you references from previous puppy buyers
  
  
• Insist that puppies sold as pets be spayed or neutered and sold with limited registration
  
  
• Never sell puppies through pet stores or dog brokers

Please note: many articles on finding a reputable breeder (including the CKC) suggest visiting the home of the breeder and/or the kennel where you are thinking of buying your puppy from. A number of breeders shy away from allowing people to handle their puppies until after the pups have been vaccinated. Although it would be nice to allow everyone who wanted to come and see our pups full access to them, it is just not feasible with the number of requests that we get and the potential risk involved.

We will allow serious potential owners to come out and meet us and see our puppies in order to pick out a pup and place a deposit. We are also open to visitors after our pups have received their first set of vaccinations, and of course, we ALWAYS welcome new owners to come and pick their puppy up when they are ready to go home. After all, it is as important for us to meet you, as it is for you to meet us!
